A forbidden garden · a broken spell · trust freely given

The garden after midnight

Original, non-explicit sample · adult characters · written for this site, not a model benchmark

The palace garden bloomed only when someone told the truth. Tonight it had been bare for hours.

Sera stood at the locked gate with a lantern and no intention of pretending she had come by accident. At thirty-one, she had learned that a useful apology began where an excuse ended.

“I took the spellbook,” she told the gardener.

One white flower opened beside his boot.

Rowan looked from the flower to her. “I know.”

“I thought I could lift the curse alone.”

A second flower unfolded.

He unlocked the gate but did not ask her to enter. She noticed the distinction. Palace life was full of invitations that behaved like orders; this one left the choice with her.

Sera stepped inside. “I need help.”

The path brightened all the way to the fountain.

Rowan admitted that he had hidden part of the spell, afraid she would accept its cost too quickly. A climbing rose stirred against the wall. She admitted that she was tired of being praised for courage when what she wanted was permission to hesitate.

They sat on the fountain's edge while the garden woke around them. Neither could undo a century of magic before sunrise. They could read the book together, ask better questions, and decide what they were willing to give.

“Stay until the lantern burns out?” he asked.

“Yes,” she said.

The fountain began to run. It was a small sound, but in the quiet garden it felt like the first honest thing the palace had said all night.
