A missing city · a mapmaker · an impossible alliance

The city between maps

Original, non-explicit sample · adult characters · written for this site, not a model benchmark

At midnight, the city vanished from Iona's map. The ink did not fade. It lifted from the page in a single dark thread and disappeared beneath the archive door.

Across the table, Cassian put down his tea.

“That is new,” he said.

“You told me this was a routine commission.”

“I hoped it would be.”

Iona had crossed half the kingdom to chart these streets. At twenty-nine, she trusted distances, measurements and the weight of a compass in her palm. Royal archivists were another matter, especially one who answered direct questions with carefully selected silences.

Cassian opened a drawer and took out a map drawn forty years earlier. The same empty space waited in its center.

“My mother lived there,” he said. “She remembered a bell tower no one else could find.”

For the first time, his composure became something she could read. It was not indifference. It was the effort of holding a hope still enough to examine.

Iona moved her chair beside his. They compared street names, river bends, the tiny errors that made a map human. Near dawn she found a mark repeated on both pages: a bridge drawn without a far bank.

“We go there,” she said.

“There may be no way back.”

“Then tell me everything before I choose.”

He did. No omissions, no assurances he could not keep. When the first light touched the archive windows, she closed her compass and held out her hand.

Cassian took it. Beyond the door, the lost ink had begun to draw a road.
